'Creating beautiful and effective gardens of all sizes"
Susan Dunstall Landscape & Garden Design is a busy practice established in 2008; over the last ten years Susan has created beautiful outdoor spaces for a range of clients across the UK. Trained at one of the world’s top professional garden design institutions, the Oxford College of Garden Design, her designs are recognised for their clean, architectural lines, rich planting and the creative use of water features and sculptures alongside elegant styling.
Intelligent design is the focus: commissions are thoughtfully planned, using traditional materials to sit harmoniously in contemporary settings. Susan uses her keen eye for detail and a multi-disciplinary background in art, design and project management to deliver a landscaped space that is bespoke to the individual client.
Susan’s practice is based in Charlbury, in the Cotswolds.
With a steep bank near to the house it was necessary to create a garden on two different levels; these were decked to give a dining terrace and sunbathing area. A pergola with retractable blinds gives control over the amount of sunlight; a raised pond with water chutes was integrated into the design; a wide gravel pathway leads through to the sunken garden with pots and new cottage planting.
With an old front wall of this thatched stone cottage disintegrating, a new design was drawn up to suit the age of the house. Low Box hedges create the outlines shapes, to give definition even in winter. Infill planting is of white Roses and Lavenders, along with other scented perennials. A large copper bowl is the new central point in the garden.
The inspiration was a garden seen at Chelsea, based on a planting scheme of purples, blues, whites, lilacs and pinks. The infrastructure was constructed first with a Cotswold drystone wall around the perimeter, then a series of steps was built to lead down into the garden from the barn. A water tank from galvanised metal is used to grow water lilies and reclaimed railway sleepers showcase raised vegetable beds.
